Weather in Okinawa on August 9th
☀️ Haisai! I’m CULT.
Today, 9th August, let’s start the Okinawa weather report.
Today was truly… the sunshine was so intense it felt like it was burning my back. It was so hot that I wondered if this is what a real Okinawan summer feels like. Until now, I could get by with a deep breath in the shade and a slow walk, barely breaking a sweat, but today, just breathing outdoors made me sweat. I think it might have been the hottest day I’ve experienced in Okinawa. The temperature reached a high of 32°C and a low of 27°C, but with the lack of wind, it felt even hotter.
Okinawa Weather Video for 9th August
Today’s video contains quite a few clips. Since I’ve been going out frequently, I’ve accumulated a lot of clips. I haven’t focused on the video quality and will continue to keep it simple. I hope you see it as a glimpse of what Okinawa is really like.
The Scene Around Miebashi

This is the scene at Miebashi at noon. I had a business meeting, so I went out. The sunlight… it’s very intense. It’s hot. Very hot.

While walking down the street, I came across an abandoned but rather cool bike, so I snapped a photo. With the temperature as it is, I reckon the weeds below would grow back in about three days even if they were cleared.

While waiting for the bus, I took a photo of an outlet selling snorkelling gear. Quite a few customers come and go here. I had a quick look, and the prices didn’t seem too expensive. If you’re interested, do visit; it’s located on Route 58. [Google Map]

Perhaps because it was the weekend, there was quite a bit of traffic on Route 58. Even when I was driving around six in the evening, Route 58 was quite congested.

It’s been a while since I took the bus, and the interior is quite cool. However, I still don’t recommend using the bus to get around in Okinawa. The schedule cannot be reliably kept due to the system. For a country that attracts many tourists, the bus system is surprisingly outdated.
Naha City Centre

This is the second floor of the bus terminal in Naha city. It’s a place where you can enjoy various things on a rainy day. There’s a parking lot, a Daiso, and a gacha arcade. It’s a good spot to visit when there’s not much to do because of the rain. It’s an outdoor terrace on the second floor, but as you can see, there’s a roof above, so you can enjoy the view of rainy Okinawa. With an 80% chance of rain on the 13th, consider visiting if you’re in Naha that day.

At first glance, it slightly resembles Osaka Ueda. I thought Okinawa felt completely different from mainland Japan, but looking at it this way, Okinawa does have some Japanese characteristics. I’m planning to conduct a snap photography session here in Okinawa soon, specifically for those who want a bit of a Japanese vibe.

I’m on my way home after finishing work. This is the entrance to Kokusai Street… It feels hotter here, perhaps because there’s so much asphalt. Just standing still makes sweat pour down like rain. It feels like the sunscreen is melting away. Today feels particularly hotter than usual.

It’s around 2 PM, and the water in the Miebashi River has been completely released. This usually means heavy rain is expected in the coming days, but now the river has been refilled. This is because Typhoon No. 11, Bavi, is forecasted to bring a lot of rain to Miyakojima and Ishigaki Island, but it seems it won’t have a significant impact on the Okinawa mainland. So, it appears they’ve hurriedly refilled the Miebashi River.

For lunch today, I had eel rice. While walking afterwards, I saw someone wearing a kimono and took a photo. It’s like a hellish weather to be wearing a kimono right now, but upon closer inspection, it seemed to be made of a fairly breathable fabric. I have another yukata shoot next week, so I’m already a bit worried.

As the weather is quite hot, I grab an Okinawa Zenzai from the Lawson convenience store and head home. Zenzai is indeed delicious. Lawson’s is tasty too, but Fujiyama’s Zenzai is the best.

In the afternoon, I went to the office for a bit. After finishing all my tasks, I returned home. The sunset is blazing. Yesterday’s sunset was incredibly beautiful, but today I had so much to do that I couldn’t observe it until the end, which is a bit disappointing. With that, I conclude the weather photos for Okinawa on August 9th.
Okinawa Weather Forecast

This is the latest path of Typhoon No. 11, Bavi. Until this morning, it was expected to pass directly over the main island of Okinawa, but it has shifted slightly this afternoon. Although it falls within the red shaded area, the typhoon itself is not extremely powerful, being a Category 2 typhoon.
Typhoon intensity is categorised from Level 1 to 4, and with a Category 2 typhoon of this range, it seems unlikely to have a significant impact. Therefore, the expected rainfall is not currently predicted to be heavy.

This is the ten-day weather forecast for Okinawa. The 11th typhoon is expected to affect Okinawa directly or indirectly on the 12th and 13th. The two regions above are the main island of Okinawa, and the two regions below are Miyakojima and Ishigaki Island. Looking at the icon for the 13th, you can see that heavy rain is expected, while the main island is indicated to be clear, cloudy, or rainy.
For those on Ishigaki or Miyakojima Island on August 13th, it might be best to avoid outdoor activities if possible.
That’s all for the Okinawa weather update on August 9th! I’ll be back tomorrow with the latest information. Matayasai 👋
