Prague Weather in April
Warm sunshine and spring days when flowers are in full bloom

April weather in Prague is truly a springtime period. Until March you see flowers that coexist between winter and spring, but in April spring flowers really burst into bloom, and there are many clear, warm, sunny days.
It would be nice if the weather were perfect, but a feature of Prague’s April weather is that short rain showers become more frequent and the daily temperature swings grow more extreme. Days are often mild enough that a thick shirt with a lightweight padded vest is plenty, but when the sun goes down and night falls the temperature can drop enough to need a light down jacket. These extreme day–night swings continue from April through late June. Still, you can pack lighter than you would for travel in January–March.
Every year I consider April the peak season for portrait shoots in Prague. Perhaps because the flowers are in full bloom and the days are cozy, honeymooners become noticeably more common. The warm sunshine almost feels like a blessing for honeymoon couples.

The average temperature in Prague in April is around 9°C (48°F). Days dipping below freezing are rare, and while there’s a very small chance of snow, it’s usually only for a very short time. Unlike January–March, rain appears more often instead of snow. In April–May Prague has no monsoon season, but you can get roughly 5 to 10 days with sudden showers. Fortunately, all-day rain is uncommon.
If the rain looks heavy and lasting, most of the time it passes quickly—just pop into a cafe for a cup of tea and wait it out.
April is a season I strongly recommend for visiting Prague. It’s great with a baby, fine with a dog, and most of all you’ll notice a lot more honeymooners around.
What are the features of Prague’s April weather?
Overall, April in Prague has many more clear days than cloudy ones. Through January–March Prague can feel a bit gloomy because of frequent clouds, but from April onward clear skies far outnumber cloudy days. You can see blue skies almost every day, like in the photo above, which makes the trip feel more lively.
With more direct sunshine there are many cozy days. The garden on the castle walls south of Prague Castle, the Zahrada Na valech, and to the north the Královská zahrada (Royal Garden) open from April 1, so don’t just see St. Vitus Cathedral (Katedrála sv. Víta) and move on—take a walk through the gardens too.
How should you dress?
The photo above shows Prague in April. Around noon you can see a woman wearing a sleeveless top—personally I think that’s a bit much. It can be warm enough to work up a little sweat, but not to the point of exposing a lot of skin. From my experience, European women seem to tolerate cold better than Korean or Japanese women.
So my recommendation is: make sure to bring a lightweight down jacket. This photo is at midday, right? In the early morning and at night the temperature drops sharply because of the large daily swings.
One example: I did day-and-night wedding shoot sessions for a honeymoon couple in mid-April. The bride wore a very slim dress with a completely open back during the daytime shoot, and for the night shoot around 9 PM she wore a similarly back-exposed dress, but she got so cold that the shoot had to be stopped midway.
Be sure to dress warmly in the early morning and at night. When the day–night difference is large, it can swing as much as 20°C. Understanding it that way helps.
The photo above shows Charles Bridge shortly after noon. Most people are wearing lightweight down jackets or light coats. There are many days when temperatures rise enough for sleeveless tops at midday, but there are also many days when they don’t—so definitely bring an outer layer. It can still be chilly even at midday.
The two photos above were taken at night in April. For about an hour after sunset it’s usually fine, but typically two hours after sunset the temperature drops significantly, so you should wear an outer layer like the woman on the right.
I personally don’t feel cold easily, but I still always bring a light coat when I go out to shoot.
Places worth visiting in Prague in April
Many of Prague’s famous gardens are closed until March. They often undergo maintenance and are fenced off when trees are still bare, but from April they definitely open. Check Prague Castle’s official site (hrad.cz) because there can be days closed for events or maintenance, so it’s good to verify in advance. A “Prague this week” page will be launched later that provides real-time updates on maintenance or access restrictions for major attractions. I’ll update this post after it’s published.

Also consider visiting Strahov Monastery (Strahovský klášter), Chotek Gardens (Chotkovy sady), and Letná Park (Letenské sady). If you start around 10 AM, these are lovely places for a sunny walk.
I’ve marked several walkable routes where you can enjoy April’s warm sunshine—try visiting them one by one. By the way, the two lower photos above of Letenské sady are along the road where I commuted every day for ten years; they still feel familiar when I see them in photos.

To summarize Prague’s April weather: midday often brings warm sunshine and spring flowers, but sudden showers frequently occur, though most pass quickly so they aren’t a major concern. If steady all-day rain is forecast, you’ll easily see that in weather reports. It’s rare to have many consecutive days of continuous rain, so don’t worry.
Because morning, daytime, and nighttime temperature swings can be very large, be sure to bring a lightweight down jacket or other outerwear for mornings and nights, and dress for daytime conditions accordingly.

- Temperatures are comfortable for traveling — a little chilly but not hot. You can enjoy spring flowers, and the gardens around Prague Castle open up, so I recommend visiting Prague starting in April.
- Because warm and chilly days coexist, some days you’ll need short sleeves, while on others a lightweight padded jacket is necessary. You don’t need a big long puffer; a light down jacket or layers plus a windbreaker is a good, practical choice.
- From April, Prague has frequent rainy days. However, most are sudden showers, so it's rare for rain to last all day. If it does rain all day, your smartphone weather app will show it, so you'll notice easily.
- If you want to see Prague filled with flowers, early April is best; if you have pollen allergies or prefer it a bit warmer, I recommend visiting Prague in late April.
- I recommend taking a walk and watching the peacocks in the southern and northern gardens of Prague Castle mentioned above, and in the Wallenstein Garden (Valdštejnská zahrada) at the castle’s east exit.
