On Okinawa’s Kokusai-dori there’s a pub called Papa Chicken where you can enjoy Korean-style fried chicken. It’s run by a Korean, and they serve spicy, Korean-style chicken as well as milder versions adapted to local Japanese tastes. I recommend stopping by if you’re craving Korean fried chicken.
Near Naha Airport in Okinawa, there’s a very cheap franchise yakiniku restaurant called An-An. It’s practically a must-visit for travelers on a tight budget. For about ¥3,000 per person, you can eat your fill!
There are plenty of decent restaurants in southern Okinawa and Naha, but up north there just aren’t many restaurants or cafés. So check out 846 Yajiro I discovered — beat the hot Okinawan sun with a coffee or a sweet acai bowl.
Miyakojima is beautiful, but the island is small and there aren’t many restaurants, so deciding where to eat can be a real headache. So let me introduce Yakitori 鳥道楽 稲村 — a place that’s hard to go wrong with. Who doesn’t like yakitori?
There’s a really delicious ramen shop on Okinawa’s Kokusai-dori that’s only open on weekends. It’s called New Cotobuki — I used to stop by it often after work while living in Okinawa, and it’s a place I’d love to recommend to you.
Kokusai-dori has a little bit of everything. There are plenty of Okinawa-style restaurants, but sometimes you might want plain Japanese-style food — when that happens, head to Gyukatsu Motomura’s Kokusai-dori branch and enjoy gyukatsu sizzling as it’s grilled right in front of you.
Silladang in Gyeongju sits on Hwangridan-gil. Its hanok-style cafe and Korean snacks really enhance that travel-in-Gyeongju feeling, and the souvenirs they sell are so quintessentially Gyeongju that they make perfect gifts.
On a trip to Tongyeong, you can try something a little special: Dongpirang Hotteok. They’re only 500 won each, so you can enjoy them without worry, and they’re conveniently located near the Dongpirang Mural Village. Best of all, Hotteok are delicious 😀
Tongyeong is inexpensive and peaceful, so it’s a great place to travel, but a major downside is that there isn’t much for kids to eat. That’s why Cafe R, a restaurant that was newly remodeled last month, is a welcome find — they offer a variety of tonkatsu, and it’s delicious. It’s a taste even foreigners would enjoy.
When traveling to Tongyeong or Geoje, it can often be tricky to find places that are good for dining with kids. In that case, I recommend stopping by Baramui Hotdog — a spot where kids can enjoy a meal. I personally enjoyed it a lot.
At last, Menya Dougen! This is the restaurant I loved most while living in Okinawa. I can confidently say their tsukemen is the best I’ve had in Okinawa.
If you visit Tongyeong’s Pyeongin Iljuro during cherry blossom season, you can enjoy the blooms in a peaceful, relaxed setting. Tongyeong City put a lot of effort into preparing it, but it’s not well known because of limited promotion. It’s a lovely cherry blossom-lined road, so I recommend stopping by.
A Tongyeong local’s pick: Tongyeong Chungmu Kalguksu. Drop by for a bowl of delicious kalguksu made with seafood fresh from the Tongyeong waters and noodles hand-pulled in-house.
