Alforno Prague: When You Crave Margherita

Margherita and pasta like kalguksu near Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí)

Dobrý den! I’m CULT.
Today I’d like to talk about a good Italian restaurant in central Prague. I’ve written about it a few times before, and I like their pizza and pasta. I’ve tried most of the menu. Today’s pizza was a success, but the pasta fell a little short..
Anyway, it’s a pretty good place overall, so give it a try if you’re craving pizza or pasta. It’s near Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí), right in the heart of the tourist area, so it’s very easy to get to.

Parasols and tables with red checked tablecloths line the street outside Alforno.

★★★★☆4The Margherita was tasty, but the pasta, with noodles like kalguksu, wasn't quite to my taste.

ProsI enjoyed the Margherita, but the pasta all’amatriciana, with noodles like kalguksu, wasn't my thing. You can watch the whole pizza-making process. In August 2024, three drinks and two dishes came to 805 CZK, and I paid 900 CZK including the tip.
ConsIt's a shame they don't have Hawaiian pizza with pineapple.

As I mentioned, it’s near Old Town Square (Staroměstské náměstí). Really easy to find 😀

A sign in Czech and English asks customers to wait to be seated.

Someone told me,, Koreans just sit down wherever they like, so restaurants make people wait at the entrance,, which is nonsense. Plenty of Czechs do it too -_-;;
This place is popular on weekend nights. Even if there’s no queue, they still need time to clear a table, so wait here and they’ll show you to a seat.

This is what it looks like inside. It hasn’t changed much since it opened. Before this place, there was a Czech restaurant here called Kolonial that I really liked. Now it’s an Italian restaurant. Maybe this spot just has a knack for attracting good food.

The pasta menu is written in Czech.

I ordered a Margherita pizza. While taking photos on Charles Bridge (Karlův most) that morning, I saw a Margherita statue that had been put up there, and suddenly I wanted a Margherita.
For starters, the aglio e olio and carbonara here are good. The Diavola pizza is good too. I’m trying different dishes for this post, so I’m taking a bit of a chance,,

A fork and knife lie on a red napkin.

Time to wait for the food.
The cutlery is jeul. I think WMF makes almost all its products in Germany. I have a WMF kitchen knife and sharpening stone at home, and they’re really good. I’ve been using them happily for over 7 years. Dresden is the place to buy WMF cheaply.

Beer and cola sit on the table.

The drinks menu has changed since my last visit. What I had last time is gone,,

A cook makes pizza in front of the oven.

You can watch the whole pizza-making process. That’s my pizza. I know because apparently I’m the only person who’s ordered one right now.

Bread served before the meal sits in a paper bag bearing the Alforno logo.

Bread before the meal,, I have to visit two restaurants for reviews today, so I can’t fill up on mere carbs,, Anyway, it’s good dipped in olive oil. (Speaking from past experience.)

The pasta with noodles like kalguksu and the Margherita have arrived.

all’amatriciana

Aglio e olio is twirled around a fork.

If you know your pasta, you might enjoy this?
If you don’t, play it safe with the carbonara or aglio e olio ~_~

Basil tops the Margherita pizza.

This is the Margherita I ordered. You can judge a pizza place by its Margherita alone. Mmm, mmm, it’s good 😀
My biggest complaint about this place is,, Hawaiian! No pineapple pizza. These people know nothing about pizza,,

The plate is completely empty.

Polished it off.

The receipt shows a total of 805 CZK.

Three drinks and two dishes came to 805 CZK, and I rounded it up to 900 CZK with the tip. It had been a long time since I’d been back to Korea, so I wasn’t sure what a meal like this would cost at an Italian restaurant there. By the standards I’d developed living in Prague, though, it felt a little expensive.
There’s a really good Italian restaurant called Flamengo in the Prague 7 district, with big portions and low prices. It’s a bit awkward for visitors to get to, though. Still, if you’re staying for a month or taking a longer trip, I’d recommend giving it a try.

●Frequently Asked Questions

  • There's a sign at the entrance asking you to wait to be seated. Even if you see an empty table, they need time to clear it, so wait for someone to show you to a seat.
