U Glaubiců: Pilsner Urquell in Prague, Beer First

A maze of tables and fresh Pilsner Urquell

Dobrý den! I’m CULT.
Today, I’d like to tell you about a pub in Prague that gets its Pilsner Urquell fresh from the brewery in Plzeň and serves it the very same day.
There are places that pour an even better Pilsner Urquell, but they tend to be tiny inside and have long waits, so I’ll cover those another time. I’m introducing this place because it’s easy to get to while sightseeing in Prague, and the beer is fresh.

A Pilsner Urquell delivery truck is parked on the street.

U Glaubiců at a Glance

I went for beer delivered from the Plzeň brewery at dawn.

PriceFour Pilsner Urquells, duck and potato dumplings: 717 CZK, 750 CZK including a tip (September 2023)
ProsThe duck is well seasoned without being salty and goes well with beer. The potato dumplings pair well with beer too, with a texture you rarely find in Korea. In September 2023, I paid 717 CZK for four beers and two dishes, or 750 CZK including a tip.
ConsThe beer is cheap, but the food is a little expensive.

The pub is on the block next to Starbucks, west of Charles Bridge (Karlův most).
The photo above shows.. a beer delivery truck that left the brewery in Plzeň at dawn. They pump the beer from the truck into the equipment inside the pub, a bit like filling up the pumps at a gas station.

A chalkboard sign lists 0.5 liters of Pilsner Urquell for 43 CZK.

Another thing about this place.. it boasts the lowest Pilsner Urquell prices in Prague. That shows how confident they are about how fast the beer sells. The food, though, is a little expensive. If you really like beer, I think this might be the best place for you.

The pub is huge. I think.. it might be the biggest beer pub after Lokál Dlouhá. Well.. I haven’t actually measured them, so I can’t be sure, but it’s enormous. This is the outdoor area; head inside and the tables just keep going, like a maze.
Personally, I wanted to eat outside.. but there were no seats, so I kept heading further in.

The interior has ceiling lights and a long bar.

No seats on the ground floor either..

Beer equipment stands in a dimly lit area.

So I went down to the basement. The beer pumped in from the truck in the first photo seems to be routed to this equipment. Looking at the layout of the building and the way the beer is piped in, I imagine this is where it would end up.

The basement dining room has stone walls and long wooden tables.

With no seats on the ground floor, I was shown down to the basement. Something about the space makes me think it would stay warm in winter even without heating.

The menu.. hasn’t changed in 10 years.. Just the pictures and prices 😀
I ordered two Pilsner Urquells, the duck, number 511, and the potato dumplings, number 538.

Two glasses of Pilsner Urquell are served.

The Pilsner Urquell here is really good.

Hands clink beer glasses together.

Na zdraví!
A clink of glasses, then a good long swig.

Two beer glasses are empty.

I’d finished a whole glass before the food arrived.

Two fresh glasses of beer have arrived.

So we ordered another glass each.

Duck and potato dumplings are served on the table.

The food arrived when we were about halfway through those. Duck and potato dumplings, both traditional Czech dishes.
I have my own favorites.. but I’ve been picking traditional Czech dishes I don’t usually eat, just so I can show them to you -_-

Roast duck is served with red cabbage and knedlíky.

The duck is well seasoned without being salty. The flavor is mild, making it an easy dish for anyone to enjoy.

A fork holds a piece of duck.

It’s already seasoned just right, so it doesn’t really need anything else. It goes well with beer too.

A fork holds pickled red cabbage.

If it tastes a little bland, try it with the pickled red cabbage. I’ve grown very fond of red cabbage since coming to Czechia. If the food gets a bit rich.. it cuts right through that.

A fork holds potato bread.

Try the potato bread served alongside it too. When I come here with my Czech friends.. all I have is beer and potato bread. Given what my Czech friends earn, the food here is too expensive for a meal..

The potato dumplings are topped with onions.

Next up.. potato dumplings, which I really like. I think they have a texture you rarely come across in Korea.

This close-up shows the filling inside a potato dumpling.

They’re made from knedlíky bread, shaped into dumplings and filled with onions and beef. These also.. go well with beer.

The plates have been cleared of food.

The two of us.. polished it all off. That was a good meal.

The receipt shows a total of 717 CZK.

The bill came to 717 CZK, and I rounded it up to 750 CZK with the tip.

The name should be pronounced U Glaubichu.. but I’ve been calling it U Glebiku since I first came to Czechia, before I started learning Czech.. That version rolls off my tongue now, so I still call it that. I’ve been coming here for a very long time. The food is pretty good, and above all, the beer is fresh, so I can confidently recommend it.

The prices in this post are from my September 2023 visit. On the menu on the official U Glaubiců website, a 0.5L Pilsner Urquell has gone from 43 CZK to 49 CZK, and a 1/4 roast duck from 295 CZK to 355 CZK (checked November 2, 2026). The pub is open daily 10:30–23:00, and the kitchen stays open until 22:30. I found no reports of it closing, and you can book online through the website.

If you like beer, do stop by and enjoy a fresh Pilsner Urquell.
