Beautiful Letná Park overlooking Prague

Dobrý den! This is CULT.
When preparing a trip to Prague you’ll visit many places, and if you search vaguely you’ll probably find locations around Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) or Charles Bridge (Karlův most). However, there are several spots that let you enjoy more beautiful views of Prague, and one of them is Letenské sady (Letná Park).

I lived for ten years in Prague 7, which borders Letná Park, so I know the paths I used for daily exercise and commuting very well. It’s also a popular spot for watching the New Year sunrise, and since it’s a park open to everyone — easy to access with dogs, strollers, and wheelchairs — I recommend it as a must-see when you visit Prague.

Prague — Letná Park

Letná Park sits north of Charles Bridge, on a hill higher than Old Town Square and the Jewish Quarter, so it offers sweeping views over Prague. If you visit in daylight you can easily take great souvenir photos, and on spring–autumn weekends a small club sometimes opens at the Metronome. It’s a place to enjoy music, dancing, and a beer.
There’s no entrance fee and the park is open 24 hours; in winter it’s especially a place where you can enjoy both sunrise and sunset from the same spot.

Also, it’s located near Prague’s center and is effectively the third-largest park tourists can reasonably visit. If your schedule is short and you can only choose one place to see the Vltava and Charles Bridge, I’d definitely recommend Letná Park.

Letná Park is quite large, and if you search for Letná Park you’ll often end up near AC Sparta Prague’s stadium, away from the main viewpoints. So it’s easier to search for the Metronome — the spot with Prague views — and go there first. [Google Map]

What can you see?

If you pin it on Google Maps and visit, you’ll see something like this: people sitting around the Metronome resting, young people practicing skateboarding, groups chatting over beers — in many ways this place feels like a slice of local life. I’ve visited this spot thousands of times, so it’s very familiar to me. Isn’t it cool to sit on that wall and look at Charles Bridge?
These photos were taken today, so I’m dressed light — if you’re traveling to Prague in August I recommend checking Prague weather month by month.

You can look out over the city in different directions and take a walk. In 2022 an artificial pond was created inside the park, which adds variety to Letná. During summer heatwaves many people swim here. Prague heatwaves usually occur from mid-July to early August. [Prague weather month by month]

In summer there’s also an ice cream food truck. The left photo is from 2023 and the right photo was taken today in August 2026. The truck looks a little more worn after three years. Its freezer isn’t very powerful, so the ice cream used to melt quickly. In the mornings it was actually nicely solid.

Hanavský Pavilon

There’s also a famous restaurant called Hanavský Pavilon. Personally I don’t find the food outstanding, but the view is excellent and it’s been used for the opening sequences of several films and TV dramas.

It looks like the photos above — Mission: Impossible 1, the Nodame Cantabile movie, and the drama “Lovers in Prague” all filmed opening scenes here. Come to Hanavský Pavilon and take a great riverside photo of the Vltava.

Beer Garden

Pivní zahrádka Letná (Beer Garden) is a place where you can sit and eat food and drink beverages or beer you brought yourself. All the tables are the property of the city of Prague, so anyone can sit there for free and enjoy the evening breeze. I often bought a beer from the supermarket and finished the day sitting at the beer garden.

New Year sunrise

Around 8:00 a.m. on January 1 you can watch the New Year sunrise from Letná Park. The recommended point is here — just click and go.
The stairs were built when Prague carried out park renovations as a stimulus project during the 2021 COVID-19 pandemic when unemployment rose sharply. I don’t know if it was intentional, but the spot ended up feeling like it was made for watching the New Year sunrise. If you spend New Year in Prague, stop by this spot next to the beer garden and make a wish 😀

I mentioned earlier that you can see both sunrise and sunset from Letná Park — for example, after watching the New Year sunrise at the beer garden around 8 a.m. on January 1, you can go to Hanavský Pavilon at about 4 p.m. the same day to watch the sunset. That just shows how short the winter days in Prague are.

In closing…

This place is part of my life in Prague. If you could visit only one park, I recommend Letná Park. I returned to Prague after 1 year and 8 months, and the first place I visited was Letná. If you want to feel relaxed and freely enjoy a drink or a beer while looking at a great view, be sure to visit Letná Park.
